Columbia Cemetery, Boulder, CO
Persons Passed, History Survived
Columbia (“Pioneer”) Cemetery is about as old as the town it resides—Boulder, Colorado. Yet, unlike the city, which mostly prospered through time, Columbia Cemetery had its fair share of difficulties quite early on after its erection. The cemetery experienced a real-life game of hot potato, as it cycled through different types of management that carried a wide variety of experiences. The cemetery was losing future residents and even past residents, because families were moving loved ones out of the unkept grounds. The mid-20th century revolved around upgrading the grounds and creating organized maintenance work. Yet, it wasn’t until the late-20th century for substantial improvements to begin. After 130 years, the cemetery now has the attention and care it needs to preserve its treasure of local history. Columbia Cemetery illustrates that the ownership of public land isn’t so straightforward, the “best” might not always be the best, and there can be detrimental consequences if sufficient management is not figured out early on.
